Preventing relapse into depression Picture of person smiling

If you have had depression in the past and are worried about getting depressed again, there are several things you can do to stay well. It's about looking after your mind and body. Another thing you can do is complete a meditation-based course: Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy at Breathing Space.

Looking after your body and mind

There are several things you can do to make sure you maintain a generally positive mood. These can also be helpful if you have mild depression:

  • Work with your thinking: Sometimes 'thinking errors' can lead to low moods. For example, you might feel like everything is going wrong when it's only one small problem that you can deal with. Take some time to look at whether you might be getting things out of proportion.
  • Occupy your mind: Giving your attention to a task can lift your mood. It could be an everyday task like housework, or some activity or hobby that you enjoy doing.
  • Exercise regularly: Doing physical activity can relax you and make you feel good mentally and physically.
  • Eat well: A balanced diet helps regulate your moods. Don't have too much fatty foods, sugar, caffeine and alcohol.
  • Get enough sleep: Sleeping too much or too little can lower your mood. Most people need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.
  • Talk to someone: Talking to friends about how you feel can help you feel connected and understood, and might help you think about what other things you could do to help yourself. If you don't want to talk to a friend, you can call mental health helplines like Saneline and Samaritans. See our links page for details.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

Clinical research has shown that Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is one of the most effective ways of preventing recurrent depression from coming back. MBCT is a meditation-based course that helps you become more aware of your habits of thinking that can lead into depression. Breathing Space runs MBCT courses throughout the year.
